Welcome To The South West Rail and Heritage Centre

The South West Rail and Heritage Centre, situated in Boyanup in the South West of Western Australia is dedicated to the industrial heritage of the South West.  The site, a partnership between Rail Heritage WA and the Boyanup Foundation Inc, is currently home to five resident groups, all of which contribute to the common goal of preserving and growing awareness of the industrial heritage of the region.

Resident Groups

Boyanup Foundation Blacksmiths, Capel Men’s Shed, Preston River Old Machinery Group, Rail Heritage WA and South West Model Railway Group, are all open to new members and present a unique opportunity to learn new skills whilst taking an active role in ‘keeping history alive’.

On the fourth Sunday of each month, the South West Rail and Heritage Centre opens from 10am to 2pm with all resident groups working and demonstrating the techniques and skills that define their activities. Each of these Open Days has a theme which highlights an aspect of the heritage of the South West and/or promotes our resident groups and their skills and knowledge.

Come and join us at the South West Rail & Heritage Centre, Boyanup Sunday September 27th for our September Open Day.

With Leschenault Lady up in Perth receiving some TLC, steam locomotive H18 will be on display. Built by Neilson & Co, Glasgow and delivered in 1889, H18 spent time around the state including the opening of the Bunbury – Boyanup railway (1891) and working on the Mundaring Weir line (1903-1904) and the Fremantle Harbour North Quay (1911). By 1949 it was back in Bunbury for use on the breakwater construction, then shunting duties until c1961. It underwent a rebuild by Rail Heritage WA in the Midland Workshops and moved to the SWRHC in 2019

Inside the Roundhouse, have a look in our Mobile Museum ZJ270, rail maintenance trolleys and our collection of old farm equipment. As usual our Old Machinery Group, Model Railway Group, Blacksmiths and Capel Men’s Shed will be demonstrating their skills,

Blacksmiths and Men’s Shed have a range of items for sale.

The Picnic Van will be open for light refreshments including Tea, Coffee, Sausage Sizzle, Toasties, Devonshire Tea and Cool Drinks.
